The HullBID Awards returned for their 10th year to the DoubleTree by Hilton.  Talent and the brightest brains filled the room to recognise resilience, innovation and creativity.  More than 320 people joined us on the evening to celebrate the city centre businesses who are striving, thriving and surviving to make our city centre a more vibrant place to live, work and visit.

Rubicon Bridge Ltd have produced innovative software which solves a key problem for food supplement brands expanding their sales across Europe through eCommerce. One of the key challenges for selling foods and food supplements in Europe is the complex nature of the regulations from the EU, which differ by nation. They are difficult to understand and must be applied to packaging and marketing pages in every language by European country. Rubicon Bridge automatically applies the regulations to each product and provides legal copy.

SuperbowlUK showed the strength of their employees across the board with colleagues nominating each other for a variety of attributes which all add up to outstanding service. Hull Museums and Gallery provide free access to amazing art and culture thanks in no small part to the front of house teams at seven different sites. Ferens Art Gallery puts Hull on the map regionally and nationally, bringing world class culture to Hull whilst staying true to its founder Thomas Ferens’ vision. The museums present world class treasures with programming on a par with national museums and galleries and staff  go above and beyond to ensure every visit to each of the sites is welcoming, accessible, safe and inspiring.

COMMITMENT TO HEALTH & WELLBEING AWARD - SPONSORED BY BRYCE MENNELL

360 Chartered Accountants began a mental health and wellbeing drive during lockdown with activities including quizzes , bingo , Pilates and cooking sessions and continued it afterwards with monthly competitions such as average increase steps challenges. It has since introduced drop-in sessions with mental health first aiders, dress down and treat days and trips to the theatre. A “me hour” and early finishes on Fridays also help towards a more relaxed work-life balance.

Artisan’s customers are full of praise for a “beautiful welcoming shop” with “lovely staff” and “shop windows and flower displays which are always stunning.” They also like the consultation room which provides privacy for people organising flowers for special occasions, and the workshops which help people make their own creations. The shop was described as “an asset to paragon arcade which brightens up Paragon Street.”

Cooke & Son Ltd. was established in Hull in 1864 as a clockmaker and optician and has been operating from various locations including Paragon Street, Scale Lane and Whitefriargate. It has been in Market Place since the 1950s and supplies essential products and services including navigational equipment, charts and publications to mariners locally, nationally and Internationally. Some of the staff have been with the business for more than 50 years.

Savile Street’s vibrant LGBTQ+ hub has re-styled itself as Hull Freedom Quarter, standing as a beacon of inclusivity and entertainment boasting four dynamic bars. Savile Row, Monroe’s Bar, Unit 49 and Cherry’s Bar are synonymous with top-notch entertainment and have established themselves as safe havens for everyone. Their unwavering commitment to building an inclusive environment has created a home away from home for the LGBTQ+ community and allies alike, embracing diversity and celebrating unity.

Customers were spellbound by the magic of Milchig with one of them highlighting “the wizards working behind the scenes to create some of the best flavour combinations I’ve ever experienced and some of the greatest foods I’ve ever tasted!” Others told how impressed they were by the helpful staff and the atmosphere. In summary, one reported: “Food is always outstanding, coffee is sublime, always a great experience and the vibes are everything Hull needs.”

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION AWARD - SPONSORED BY PRESTIGE RECRUITMENT

Hull College is on a resurgent journey after a long period of instability. Part of that is a three phase campus transformation project which has brought a renewed energy to the way staff and students behave and interact. The College has led the way in integrating refugees and asylum seekers into society. It is also building stronger links with business and with the wider community. The message is Hull College is back and will continue to rise to its former status and place within the Hull community.

JUDGES' SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD - SPONSORED BY EAST YORKSHIRE BUSES

* WINNER * Mikey Martins, Freedom Festival Trust

The Judges didn’t have to look beyond Mikey Martins for this year’s Special Recognition Award, celebrating the considerable achievements of the man who has led Hull’s Freedom Festival for the last nine years. Plaudits flooded in after Mikey announced in January that he is to step down as CEO and artistic director of Freedom. His final curated event will be the 2024 Freedom Festival, to be held between August 28 and September 1 and this award acknowledges the impact made by Mikey and the Festival on Hull’s arts and culture profile and its economy. Freedom Festival trustee Karen Hall received the award on Mikey’s behalf.
